Cabins
We are thrilled to have secured exclusive access of two wilderness cabins each with its own unique feel but both built to a high specification for the Northern Lights Wilderness Cabin Escape. The beauty of having private accommodation cannot be underestimated as you can relax in your own space, sit outside with a glass of Bubbly watching your own private Northern Lights display and feel like you own a slice of Iceland’s wilderness for the time you are there.
Eyjafjallajokull cabin sits alone on the volcanic plain running down to the Atlantic with the backdrop of the volcano of the same name (famed for erupting in 2010 and shutting down European airspace). Modern, bright and airy with huge windows it is built with Northern Light viewing in mind and we love hearing about our clients who watch the Northern Lights from the back door with a glass of wine in their hand! This has 4 bedrooms taking up to 7 people but we are very happy to book this just for 2 people and for you to take over the whole cabin.
Our other cabin, Saeli Icelandic Cabin, is more of a log style cabin with a stunning view of Hekla, Iceland’s most notorious volcano and the surrounding volcanoes (you are spoilt for choice). Perfect for two couples or a family group in 2 main bedrooms with an attic which the kids will love. This cabin comes with its own private hot tub too. Just imagine sitting in the hot tub as the Northern Lights perform above you and no-one else in sight. Do memories get better than that?!
We work with two top-end hotels in the area
Hotel Ranga has long been a firm favourite with us with its Aurora wake up call, hot tubs and the new observatory with computerized telescopes. Every clear night an astrology expert will be on hand to talk you through the science of the Northern Lights as well as show you how to use the telescopes and even hook up the telescopes to certain cameras so you can photograph the Northern Lights. The team at Hotel Ranga tries very hard to make sure your Northern Lights stay with them is wonderful.
The food is exceptional at Hotel Ranga with a service level to match and their themed suites (Themed around the 7 continents of this world) are out of this world.! On our exclusive breaks we would always recommend you stay in one of the suites. Each has been authentically decorated with furnishings from the appropriate continent. The Junior Suites are themed Asia, N America, S America, Australia whilst the Master Suites represent Africa & Antartica. The ultimate suite is the Royal Suite and the newest addition is the Icelandic Suite.
A new kid on the block is Skalakot Manor Hotel, with only 14 bedrooms and refurbished to an extremely high standard and situated with Mount Hekla as the backdrop. The hotel is an extension to a farm where the owners live and they like to look after their visitors as guests of the family, so expect to be treated to a very warm welcome. Situated on farmland there are no artificial lights to spoil your Northern Lights Holiday and the peace of the wilderness will envelop you. It’s a beautiful boutique hotel with stunning food and a lovely atmosphere. The top suite- the master suite has its own log fire which you can relax in front of after your day exploring the volcanic beauties in the area. It’s a very romantic spot!
Personal superjeep tours
On all of our breaks we only offer small personal superjeep tours. Iceland has a vast choice of bus tours and huge superjeeps that take up to 12 people, but we want to give you a personalized and special experience where the guide can gauge and adapt to your interests, and take you to places the others cannot reach in the heart of the wilderness. The superjeep tours we offer are limited to 8 people and often this number will be split into two superjeeps of four people. (Though of course we will not split you if you are one larger group of 8 people!).
Personal guide
However we understand that some wish to take this to the next level and have a private guide to themselves. Of course that upgrade is possible and means that the day can be totally flexed to your interest and pace. The joy of tailor-making private tours is that the guide really can solely focus on what he thinks will enthuse you. We can offer private ice hiking on glaciers, snowmobiling, SuperJeep Tours – both day and night, Hiking tours, visiting Ice Caves, as well as helicopter trips. It all depends on your needs and budget!
To give you a feel to how this break can look we have worked up The Iceland Aurora Mecca staying at either Skalakot Manor Hotel or Hotel Ranga, but remember we can craft a break bespoke to you. Do contact us to let us know your thoughts on what you would like your Northern Lights Holiday to be.
See what our clients say
Thank you for arranging a fabulous holiday, we had a really enjoyable time and would love to return in the future. Hotel Ranga is a lovely place to stay and the owner greeted guests in the restaurant, which was an unexpected welcoming touch. We didn’t see the Northern Lights due to the weather and the trip to the Eyjafjallajokull glacier and volcano was substituted by an excursion to Thorsmork, also due to the weather, which we thoroughly enjoyed; the brochure description doesn’t do it justice. We found Iceland and the people there really charismatic. Although the wind and snow cut short the amount of travelling we could do, we still covered a reasonable amount of what we wanted to see and our appetites are whetted for a return, perhaps in Spring or Summer. We found a couple of great places to eat near the Hotel in Reykjavik. Messin does tasty fish dishes and the Icelandic Street Food restaurant was excellent, offering simple but hearty soups with refills included in the price – great value.
A fantastic short break which fulfilled all expectations. Well organised with a polished delivery, we could not have asked for more. The accommodation was perfect for us and the guides knowledgeable and helpful. Every day was packed with adventure, each lasting longer than scheduled but we were never rushed; the guides took pride in showing and explaining their beautiful country. We would certainly use Weekend a la carte again and recommend them to others.
We had a fantastic 4 nights that included glaciers, waterfalls, geysers, the aurora borealis and more! Lovely hotels, especially Hotel Ranga. We filled every moment and felt thoroughly invigorated on our return.
We had five fantastic days in beautiful Iceland, as we had never been before Aurora Nights helped with everything and made the holiday so easy and stress free. We stayed at Hotel Ranga which was amazing, we very much enjoyed the tours and the guides were brilliant, very knowledgable and friendly. We will certainly be returning to Iceland and wouldn’t hesitate to book through Aurora Nights again, special thanks to Abigail as her experience and reccommendations made the trip even better.
Fantastic service, with every detail taken care of and communicated to your agencies and hotels. Would definitely recommend and will be using again.
Superb holiday to Iceland, well organised, advice regarding trips informative and far exceeded our expectations (Glaciers and ice Cave) run by South Coast. Hotel Ranga is a lovely hotel, perfect to see Northern Lights (which we did see on our 3rd night), very comfortable, food excellent, staff helpful and informative. SouthCoast Adventure tour company were excellent, guides knowledgeable, and clearly very experienced.
What a fantastic trip! I booked this for myself and my husband to celebrate my 40th birthday and it didn’t disappoint! Booking was simple and we were kept up to date with all the details from the office team in the UK.
From the moment we arrived at Kiruna airport all the staff we encountered were so friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. We opted for the upgraded room at the Abisko Mountain Lodge which I would highly recommend. The cold weather clothing which was supplied was fantastic and kept us really warm in the sub-zero temperatures. The dog sledging, snowmobiling and the Northern Lights photography were all superb and the staff leading the trips were really friendly and so knowledgeable. Even though we weren’t able to do the sky station trip because of the weather, there was a lovely alternative evening organised for us which included a traditional dinner and a walk to the lake where we were able to see the lights. The food at the lodge was also exceptional and showcased some lovely traditional dishes using Moose and Reindeer which were wonderful to try.
I would like to send a massive thank you to all the staff at The Abisko Mountain Lodge as well as the guides we used for our guided walks, dog sledging and snowmobiling. I’d highly recommend the trip, it was our first visit to Sweden and we would definitely return. Thanks again to everyone (including the huskies) who made it so memorable!
We enjoyed both the hotels that were arranged by weekend a la Carte Aurora nights. The Porsmork trip was very enjoyable, both guides were fantastic and informative.
The Northern Light hunt trip out of Reykjavik with Superjeep was an adventure and we got to see the lights, worth braving the cold at -6.
